Hot Stone Massage

What is hot stone massage?

This is a deeply relaxing massage with heated volcanic basalt stones.  The warmth of the stones can be used to loosen tight muscles and to reduce specific areas of muscular tension, such as the neck and shoulders, before the massage.

During a remedial hot stones massage, the focus is on releasing tension from the deeper tissue structure of the muscles and fascia (or connective tissue) with deep, intense strokes, to aid relaxation.

Hot stone massage originated in ancient traditions, where stones heated in the sun or the fire were placed on the body’s chakra positions.  Today we use a modified version to transfer heat safely and comfortably, enabling a deeper relaxation.

What happens during treatment?

Smooth stones are warmed in a heated bag. The therapist places the stones in a towel and then on specific problem areas of the body, allowing the heat to transfer to the muscles.  It is particularly useful to warm the muscles before a deeper massage, as this can reduce the discomfort that is occasionally felt.

After the massage, and once the stones are cooler but still warm, they can be placed directly onto the skin.

How much does it cost?

Sports/remedial massage          90 mins        £60
